kyaingtoneKyaingetong is located in the eastern Shan State and operates as the Golden Triangle’s capital in the region. It is situated about 1,190 Km (about 1 hour 30 minutes flight) northeast of Yangon. The city is a paradise for those searching for ethnic and tribal values and its markets are always bustling with colourful hill tribes that still occasionally use British coins as currency for trade. Kyaingetong is also a treasure trove filled with old traditional Shan houses sporting intricately designed wooden balconies that characterize Shan architecture. It also serves as one of the most suitable places for eco-tourism activities like trekking, mountain-biking and adventure tours.

Near Kyaingetong lies the Loi Mwe village that once used to be a British hill station during colonial times. The village is filled Victorian styled buildings and flowerbeds from the colonial days. There are regular flights from Yangon to Kyaingetong.  The region also shares an immediate border with Thailand. (There are regular flights that operate between Heho, Namhasa, Kyaingetong, Monghsat, Tachileik, Lashio, Momeik and Yangon.

Located right on the Myanmar - Thai border in the eastern Shan State, Tachileik is being transformed into a gateway that leads straight into heart of the Golden Triangle. The Friendship Bridge that crosses the small Mae Sai stream links Tachileik to the northern Thai border town of Mae Sai. The area is currently being developed for tourism and for cross-border trade with Laos, Thailand and China. One can fly direct from Yangon to Tachileik in an hour and there is a port for ferries at the Wanpon port that is situated on the Mekong river at the Laos border, 29 km from Tachileik. The port also handles goods and shipments to and from Thailand and China.
